Could this be a rights and responsibilities issue? The cyclists are deemed to be always in the right and have minimal responsibilities.
There is little doubt that higher standards in driver training and testing are reducing accidents. Cyclists have not necessarily been subjected to any training or testing.
Little is said of cyclists colliding with pedestrians – usually on footpaths. Some could be cycling having been banned from driving. I cycle at weekends – it's a break from driving but I understand the dangers as I see cyclists 'taking their chances' most days.
Hopefully the majority of drivers understand that cyclists’ vulnerability is increasing as roads get busier. Education and legislation may be the only solution.
