Arriva plans sale of Burton
operation to Midland Classic

Arriva is in talks to sell its Burton-upon-Trent operation to independent Midland Classic.

The deal would almost double the size of Midland Classic’s operation from a current peak vehicle requirement (PVR) of 24 to 46.

In a statement Arriva says: “We are currently in talks about the potential sale. Any deal will include the TUPE of staff and we are confident that there is no threat to any job at either company as part of this process.

News broke in same week as Midland Classic took delivery of Metrocity pairing for Lichfield city services

“Although no formal agreement has yet been reached, we can confirm that an application by Midland Classic to the Traffic Commissioner to add our Wetmore Road depot to its O-Licence has been granted.

“Should the sale go ahead, we anticipate it will complete by the end of July. This deal will not include routes X38 (Burton-Derby, run jointly with Trent Barton) or 9/9A/9E/29A (Burton-Coalville-Leicester), as we will look to transfer these to the Derby and Coalville garages respectively.”

The news broke in the same week that Midland Classic took delivery of a pair of 10.1m Euro 5 Optare Metrocity buses for its Lichfield City circular services. The 35-seaters have an extra buggy bay, wheelchair bay, USB charging points and under-seat ‘mood’ lighting.

Founded in 2005 by MD James Boddice, Midland Classic is backed by minority shareholders Julian Peddle and David Reeves, which also have major interests in Centrebus and D&G Bus respectively.

Operating local services around Swadlincote and Burton, Midland Classic has grown by resurrecting routes given up by other operators, rather than in direct completion with the major local operator, Arriva.
