As a teacher and also a Category D driving licence holder, I can see the arguments for the ‘Greater Than 8’ safety campaign [routeone/news/13 September].
The reality though is that the campaign does not seem to be arguing for funding for this. Schools are already facing massive financial difficulties – see schoolcuts.org.uk for how your local schools are affected.
If the changes in legislation come in, I can see the second hand minibus market being swamped with ex-school minibuses. It also has to be realised that local authorities have additional requirements. My local authority requires that minibus drivers are retested every three years and provides on going training.
