Vemotion cameras, supplied by Critical Streaming, are being set up along a different bus route in the West Midlands every month with the intention of identifying those committing criminal acts and anti-social behaviour on buses.
14 systems are set up along each route and it is hoped that more will be made available. The cameras feed back to the Safer Travel Team, which is made up of representatives of Transport for the West Midlands, British Transport Police and West Midlands Police.
The cameras are part of 1,200 deployed across transport routes in the conurbation and combined with on-bus CCTV they allow offenders to be tracked throughout their journey.
Once an offender is identified, police follow up and intervene. Officers have tablets that enable them to observe via the cameras and track the bus that the suspect is riding on.
