The City of York Council is to introduce a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) from January 2020, with a single emissions standard of Euro 6 for buses entering the city five or more times a day.
Those entering between one and four times a day will have to meet Euro 4 by 2020, Euro 5 by January 2022, and Euro 6 by January 2024.
A consultation with bus operators will now start.
The option takes its precedent from the Oxford Low Emission Zone (LEZ), now in its fifth year of operation.
While Option 2, the tougher of the two options tabled, exempts Coastliner and EYMS long-distance inter-urban routes (on the basis of frequency), they already mainly operate with Euro 6 buses.
