TEST DRIVE | MELLOR STRATA ULTRA
Mellor takes Strata
up to the next level
There is no sign of any let-up in the popularity of minibuses
for stage carriage work. Mellor stands to benefit from that
with its Strata Ultra, which can carry up to 30 passengers

There was a surprise at Euro Bus Expo
on the Mellor stand, where visitors will
have seen two extended versions of its
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based Strata: The
8.11m Plus and the 8.78m Ultra.
They build on the success of the initial
7.76m Strata, of which 110 have been
delivered. The first Plus and Ultra examples
will enter service in May and they will
further expand the range’s appeal to
operators engaged in stage carriage work.
The Ultra seats 27 and carries three
standees. To achieve that, Mellor has
increased the rear axle’s weight tolerance to
deliver a GVW of 6,000kg.
“Response to the Strata has been fantastic,
which encouraged us to extend the range.
We now have a nice line-up of small buses
that are attractive to passengers and which
give excellent fuel economy,” says Mellor
MD John Randerson.
The first named buyer of a Strata Ultra
is Stringers Coaches of Pontefract. The
prototype that debuted alongside the Plus at
Euro Bus Expo has now moved to Millbrook
for durability testing, but first, it was made
available for a Test Drive.
The Ultra and the Plus are simple
extensions of the existing Strata and thus
they stay at 2.30m wide and 2.76m high.
