Mellor Coachcraft’s Volkswagen-based Tucana has long been a favourite in
the accessible sector, and with the move to Euro 6, the bodybuilder has
seized the chance to overhaul the model to keep it ahead of the pack

minibus, coachbuilt on the front-wheel
drive Volkswagen Transporter chassis,
satisfi es a sizeable chunk of demand in its
sector, where the ability to carry multiple
wheelchair users without requiring a lift
is often paramount.
At the same time as Volkswagen’s move
to Euro 6, Mellor took the opportunity
to introduce a completely revised version,
the Tucana II.
One of the main differences is removal
of the B-pillars, so there is no obstruction
of the mirrors and a larger signalling
window is fitted.
The driver also benefi ts from one of the
most notable introductions on the Tucana II:
Its dual-clutch, seven-speed gearbox.
Even when worked hard – as it must
be by necessity at times – the engine does
not intrude aurally into the cab or saloon.
At the front, a Ventura single plug door
is fitted along with book leaf ramp, while
at the rear on the demonstrator two ‘barn
doors’ are present that open to reveal
a second, much larger ramp.
Handling is good, and in combination
with the driveline, that allows the driver
to push on when necessary.
Its 2+1 seating layout apart, it has
a ‘big bus’ feel in the passenger cabin,
but that is not replicated from the
driver’s perspective. Instead, the
impression is more of piloting a car.
The Tucana II sets a bar in its market
Driving it is a pleasure, not to mention
very simple with the automatic gearbox,
