Alzheimer’s Society recognises First’s effort

First has received a Business Award at the inaugural Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Awards, recognising its development of a training module to help raise awareness of dementia. .

The two-and-a-half hour module is now part of First’s Driver CPC training package and has been introduced in response to David Cameron’s challenge for public transport operators to make their services more accessible to those living with dementia.

First’s drivers have gained a better understanding of the condition, building on work already carried out by the operator with Age UK through the introduction of Safe Journey cards, which allow passengers to discreetly let drivers know if they require extra help or assistance.

Say First Bus MD Giles Fearnley: “We are delighted that the work we’ve undertaken with the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness has been recognised.”
