Stonehenge’s £1.6bn plan inches closer…

After 32 years since the scheme was proposed in the 1989 Roads for Prosperity programme, the Highways Agency has agreed a route for the two-mile Stonehenge tunnel and Winterbourne bypass, which will now run north of the town.

Subject to approvals, work on the £1.6bn eight-mile dual carriageway could start in 2021.

The old A303 past Stonehenge will be grassed over to restore the scenery.
