Collaboration with Space Inclusive will see youngsters with learning disabilities transported to courses and training centres across city.
Nottingham Community Transport (NCT) has teamed up with social enterprise Space Inclusive to transport young adults with learning disabilities to training venues and courses.
Space Inclusive runs programmes for young adults with learning difficulties and it supports them in their transition into adult life. It has three bases, and transport – which is funded by Nottingham City Council – was previously by taxi.
Says Founder Richard Mynett (pictured): “Taxis came at a huge cost, and in terms of service quality, we had a few negative experiences. There was also an issue with up to 10 taxis congregating outside the building.”
NCT – a registered charity – now provides the transport via its Easylink service, which is a door-to-door accessible bus that can be pre-booked. It picks up Space Inclusive participants daily.
The operator has also recruited two Space Inclusive participants as apprentices. They carry out light vehicle maintenance one day per week at its Sherwood depot.
Adds NCT General Manager Ian Combellack: “We provide a secure and protected environment that enables a continuity and stability that taxis cannot. The knock-on effects have been great and we value the part that we play in developing opportunities for young people and helping them make their way easier and more enriching.”
