Arson blamed for blaze at First Call Travel

A blaze which destroyed 36 vehicles – including 30 coaches and buses – at First Call Travel’s depot at Pant Industrial Estate, Merthyr Tydfil, has been confirmed as arson by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

The BBC reports that fire broke out in the early hour of 28 December, with almost 60 firefighters taking five hours to bring it under control.

Before they could do so, the blaze spread from the tightly-parked vehicles to an adjacent workshop area.

Pictures show the remains of numerous coaches and buses, which had been parked closely together in an anti-theft measure. It is believed that a number of other operators have lent vehicles to First Call Travel to allow it to continue operations.

First Call Travel Ltd holds an operator’s licence for 15 vehicles at the Merthyr Tydfil site.

Police investigations into the fire are continuing.
