Driver admits: ‘I fell asleep’

Coach driver Ross Ogilvie, 23, of Heathfield, Royston, has admitted falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into a ditch while taking 42 schoolchildren and six adults to the seaside.

At Norwich Crown Court he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, and will be sentenced on 11 September.

He was driving children from Whittlesford, Cambridgeshire, to Hunstanton, Norfolk, when he crashed on the A10 near Hilgay, Norfolk, last year.

The coach was one of five, from Barley-based Richmond’s Coaches, on hire to William Westley Primary School for a summer trip. Mr Ogilvie, who no longer works for the firm, had to be cut free and suffered minor back injuries. Other passengers were treated for shock.
