Stagecoach North East and Arriva North East joined forces to promote the benefits of bus travel for the second annual Catch the Bus Week, with an unconventional new campaign that has had bus drivers in tears. .
The initiative, which ran from 28 April to 4 May, saw the two operators working with Connect Tees Valley and Local Motion to encourage local people to ditch their cars in favour of taking the bus with the ‘make a bus driver smile’ campaign.
Arriva and Stagecoach held a competition with their local bus drivers, photographing drivers for a series of light-hearted posters used across the region.
The campaign was launched with two family-friendly events in Darlington and Middlesbrough town centres.
The companies’ unconventional approach encouraged car users to think about their daily travel habits and the effect they have on congestion and the local environment.
