ITA Centro has started a consultation on an extension of the Midland Metro tram to Digbeth, which could serve National Express’ Birmingham Coach Station.
A route from Bull Street, in the city centre, to the proposed HS2 high-speed railway station at Curzon Street has already been agreed.
Now, extra government funding has been secured to support a further extension and more new trams, costing up to 130m, through Digbeth to a planned terminus and multi-storey car park-and-ride site at Adderley Street.
Option 1, a 1km extension, is direct, while the 1.5km option two goes via Digbeth High Street, serving the coach station. Both options are designed to support regeneration of Birmingham in the Eastside region. The consultation will determine which route is chosen, with opening scheduled by 2023.
