Arriva Deputy CEO and MD Mainland Europe Mike Cooper has suddenly left his post, without explanation, leading to speculation about succession planning at the German state-owned group, part of Deutsche Bahn (DB).
Mr Cooper, 51, has been on the Board since 2010, and was widely tipped to become CEO once David Martin, 62, retires. However, sources suggest that Mr Martin has made it clear that he intends to remain in post for some time.
In a brief statement Arriva says: “Mike Cooper decided to resign from his position. This followed David Martin’s decision to remain as group CEO.â€
Mr Cooper, previously EasyJet Commercial Director, joined Arriva in 2005 as MD at UK Bus. He was promoted to lead the mainland Europe business and became Deputy CEO in January 2013.
The move also means that, with the exception of Mr Martin and accountant Martin Hibbert, the five other members of Arriva’s PLC board are German nationals.
