High-profile, and sometimes controversial, Cllr Dave Merrett has been removed as transport boss of Labour-run York City Council..
It follows an embarrassment over traffic restrictions on the city centre Lendal Bridge, which aimed to improve congestion, but was ruled to be ‘illegal’ in its implementation, after motorists who had been fined successfully appealed. The opposition Conservative group was planning to make the issue the centre of its local election campaign.
Cllr Merrett axed First’s ‘ftr’ scheme in the city and proved to be a divisive figure. He takes up the new portfolio of Environmental Services, Planning and Sustainability while Cllr David Levene becomes Cabinet Member for Transport.
