‘Beware hiring freelance drivers’

Regarding HMRC rules on bus and coach drivers.

Agency or freelance drivers must be employed on PAYE

It is vital everyone understands the rules that are forced onto the driving industry, based on their supervision, control, direction, substitution and public liability.

This means all agency or freelance drivers must be fully employed on PAYE, which means tax and national insurance are deducted.

The driver can also work as a limited company, with a company bank account and public liability insurance, registered with Companies House, and the driver employed by his own company.

Self-employment is a definite no. This is what HMRC states for the driver hire industry. Operators who do not keep to this ruling face excessive penalties, and may be liable for the drivers’ tax and national insurance. Why risk it?
