A driver from Eavesway Travel, Wigan, has been praised by West Midlands Ambulance Service, for rescuing 59 children and seven teachers after a fire on Monday (23 May).
A double-decker, operated by Birmingham-based The Green Bus, caught fire on the M6 near Coleshill around 1540hrs.
The Eavesway driver, having seen the fire, stopped and used his coach to evacuate the children from the scene, before taking the group off the motorway to meet with a replacement vehicle.
Four 10-year-old girls were taken to hospital, while 13 children, plus the bus driver, were treated for smoke inhalation.
The Green Bus ‘decker was totally destroyed.
Owned by Ian Mack, and based in Hockley, The Green Bus’ main business is running 17 commercial home-to-school routes in the West Midlands. It holds an O-Licence for seven vehicles.
