Solus Coaches has become the first UK operator to put a Euro 6 coach into service.
And, the Tamworth, Staffordshire-based firm’s Director Andy Garratt is poised to order another Euro 6 Scania i6. He was also the first UK operator to order a Euro 6 coach..
While a number of pre-production Euro 6 buses are in passenger service in various UK cities, for product testing, no production Euro 6 buses have yet entered service.
The country’s debut Euro 6 coach is one of two Scania Irizar i6s delivered to Solus this month – the other is a Euro 5. Both are 360hp K360IB4x2 with Opticruise automated gearboxes.
The 53-seater 12.45m Euro 6 coach includes a DVD player with two monitors, extra-dark tinted glass, centre sunken toilet, reversing camera and Durabright alloy wheels. The Euro 5 coach is a 12.2m 51-seater to the same specification.
Both vehicles, delivered at the same time, are used on touring and corporate work. Despite not yet having been run-in, the Euro 6 version is returning an average of 11mpg, compared with 9.5mpg for the Euro 5 example. Both are fitted with Scania’s telematics, which provides detailed fuel consumption reports.
Their delivery means that Solus’ 33-strong fleet now contains eight i6 coaches – the first was bought new in 2012 – and 15 Scanias in total.
Adds Mr Garratt: “We were honoured to be invited to Spain in September 2013 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Scania and Irizar, and as soon as I saw the first Euro 6 Scania Irizar I knew I wanted that vehicle, so ordered it that night over dinner.
“I really like the Scania Irizar vehicle. It not only has the wow factor but I have the knowledge that if anything goes wrong with either the body or chassis I can take it into a Scania dealership anywhere in Europe and they will sort out the problem.â€
