Stagecoach North East has marked the career of Joe Carr, who has retired after 50 years in various roles at the company’s depot in Sunderland.
Mr Carr, now 71, began his career as a bus driver with Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive in 1976 and moved into a training role in 1987, by then for Busways Travel Services.
He started working as a driver examiner two years later. After Stagecoach acquired Busways in 1994, in 2000, he was appointed Driver Training Manager and, in 2008, promoted to Driver Standards Manager.
According to Stagecoach, “Across these roles, he played a pivotal part in training and mentoring generations of drivers, embedding high standards of safety, competence and customer care that continue to shape the business today.”
Although he had already moved to part-time, he was most recently an End Point Assessor for Stagecoach. In this role, he helped to deliver the operator’s apprenticeship scheme and assisted with engineering apprentice recruitment testing.

“His commitment to safety, professionalism and developing people has had a lasting impact on our operation and on the many colleagues who have learned from him. Joe leaves behind an incredible legacy, and we’re hugely grateful for everything he has given to the business.”
Mr Carr, who has devoted many years to serving with the Sunderland District Scout Association, looks forward to spending more time at home on DIY projects and with his wife, Maureen.
