Arriva South has partnered with Age Concern Southend to launch a Friendship Bus service designed to combat isolation.
The free transport initiative began with a trip for over-50s on the 1X service to Canvey Island.
Around eight to ten visits to venues and cultural events are planned over the course of the year.
The initiative in Southend follows the introduction of Arriva’s Friendship Bus in Maidstone in 2018 and similar examples across the business’s regional operations elsewhere.
Michael Jennings, Commercial Director for Arriva South, says: “This is about so much more than a bus journey; it’s about bringing people together and connecting them to the places they want and need to go to.
“We’re proud to be able to offer this service and are looking forward to where the Friendship Bus takes people next.”
Arriva South plans to expand the scheme and is looking for further opportunities for partnership across the region.
Michelle Dalgarno, Befriending Coordinator at Age Concern Southend, said: “Age Concern Southend is proud to partner with Arriva on the Friendship Bus initiative, which is transforming lives by bringing people over the age of 50 together.
“This important service not only provides accessible transport but also creates vital opportunities for social connection, helping to combat loneliness and build stronger communities.”
