Irizar has delivered a multi-mode i8 integral ‘Blodbussen’ to the Syddanmark region of Denmark, where it will serve the purpose of promoting and facilitating blood donation in multiple locations.

The highly customised 14m coach will be stationed at the Odense public hospital during evenings, but during the day it will visit different locations. Irizar has divided the saloon area into areas: One where donors wait and be interviewed by a doctor, another where donations take place, a kitchen, and a private section for medical staff.

Within the donation area, high-quality chairs with electrically adjustable positioning have been installed along with specialised equipment. Four hydraulic legs are fitted to the coach to stabilise it, while a lift behind the rear bogie ensures easy access.

When in use for blood donation, the i8 integral is connected to the hospital’s shore electricity supply or a municipal grid. It is equipped with a generator for use in cases of a power failure or a faulty connection. The coach has three operating modes:

  • Donation mode: Connected to a shore supply and all systems are available, or in the case of a problem, the generator is in operation
  • Driving mode: Normal, standard systems in use
  • Night mode: Connected to a shore supply, but with limited functions available.

Irizar says that delivery of the i8 integral ‘Blodbussen’ is a further example of healthcare sector demand for the model. In Sweden, two ambulance vehicles are equipped “with all kinds of medical facilities” to transport patients to hospitals.
