Behr Hella Service (BHS), a specialist in thermal management components, advises operators that the oil in air-conditioning units should be refreshed at a service or when the compressor is changed.

Compressors are pre-filled with oil to prevent dirt, debris and moisture from entering, but the oil should be changed periodically to maintain its efficiency.

BHS also advises that technicians should check the OEM’s oil specifications, as the use of the wrong oil can lead to increased compressor wear, premature failure, or warranty invalidation.

BHS offers a comprehensive range of oils that are used by vehicle and compressor OEMs. It has a choice of both hygroscopic (moisture absorbing) and non-hygroscopic oils, and both maintain the compressor’s warranty.

In particular, it says that high-quality PAO 68 and PAO 68 plus UV oils are very well-suited to use in compressors.
