Alexander Dennis has secured a further order in Hong Kong for the tri-axle Enviro500EV battery-electric double-decker after MTR Corporation selected it to supply 35 examples following a competitive tender round.
They will be put to use on MTR Corporation’s feeder network that serves the Mass Transit Railway urban rail system. 172 buses already operate on those services, with examples of the Enviro200, Enviro400, and Enviro500 models from Alexander Dennis dominating.
The Enviro500EV fleet for MTR Corporation will be delivered throughout 2025 and 2026. Completion of the order follows earlier deals for the type in Hong Kong, including for 10 units from the territory’s largest bus operator KMB.
Those for MTR will have 472kW/h of battery capacity and the Voith Electrical Drive System in its heavy duty form, giving a peak power of 410kW. Alexander Dennis says that such an output “has ample reserves to cope with Hong Kong’s topography.” Each bus will be charged via a CCS2 connection and be able to carry 122 passengers; opportunity charging has not been specified, the manufacturer has confirmed.
Speaking about the order, Alexander Dennis Managing Director Asia Pacific Andy Boulton says: “We are delighted to have been chosen by the MTR Corporation as partner for the transition to zero-emission bus services.
“Our Enviro500EV has been designed from the ground up for the demands of Hong Kong’s world class transport system, ensuring that this transformational investment in cleaner transport will deliver for the MTR Corporation.”
The Enviro500EV for Hong Kong is part of the battery-electric range developed entirely in-house by Alexander Dennis. Those for MTR will have the same driveline as that to be fitted to the Enviro400EV for the UK, which also offers a 354kW/h energy storage option.
While the Enviro500EV has been developed for Far Eastern markets, Alexander Dennis President and Managing Director Paul Davies recently confirmed that it could be built for the UK should demand warrant.
