Cardiff Bus evacuated 40 residents from a block of flats in Llanrumney following an explosion in the early hours of Friday 26 February.
South Wales Police say thieves used acetylene cylinders to gain access to a supermarket and steal a cash machine on the ground floor, which caused the explosion.
Cardiff Bus, which is part of the Evac Cardiff Group which responds to major incidents and emergencies in the city, helped transport 11 families from the crime scene to safety while emergency services responded to the incident.
“In what was a distressing event for all involved, we are extremely thankful that we were able to rescue the families residing in the flats above the Co-Op in Llanrumney and transport them to a safe place,” says Operations and Commercial Director Gareth Stevens.
“Evac Cardiff is a fantastic initiative that allows businesses across Cardiff to come together and be prepared to respond to any incident that may occur in the city.
“We will continue to provide our services to the group and while we hope that incidents such as this won’t occur again, we will always be on hand to provide any help that we can to the residents of Cardiff.”
According to a spokesman for Cardiff Council, the residents have now been moved back into their properties and a police investigation is ongoing.
