Arcola Energy will produce the fuel cell systems for a fleet of hydrogen-powered zero-emission buses bound for Liverpool at a new 15,000ft2 plant in nearby Knowsley.
It says the plant will have the capacity to build, install and service hundreds of zero-emission powertrains in its first year.
It will first produce the powertrains for a batch of up to 25 buses that are to begin trials in the city from 2020 following a successful £6.4m bid to the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.
Those buses will be delivered by a partnership between Arcola and Alexander Dennis.

Dr Todd adds that the first fuel cell units for the Liverpool buses will likely be built by October.
