‘Chippendale 300’ will take place in 2018, a nationwide celebration of the tercentenary of Thomas Chippendale’s birth in June 1718.
The great designer, furniture maker and entrepreneur will be celebrated through exhibitions, masterclasses, tours, rarely-seen works, a Chippendale bake-off competition and even a new beer, Chippend’Ale, brewed in his birthplace, Otley.
The programme includes events at Burton Constable Hall, Dumfries House, Firle Place, Furniture History Society, Harewood House Trust, Leeds City Museum, Master Carvers Association, Newby Hall, Paxton House, Temple Newsam, Weston Park and a number of National Trust properties.
Leeds City Museum will hold a major exhibition, Thomas Chippendale: A Celebration of British Craftsmanship and Design 1718-2018, from 9 February – 10 June.
Paxton House in Berwickshire will stage an exhibition called The Paxton Style – Neat & Substantially Good from 5 June – 28 August.
Harewood House near Leeds will hold Thomas Chippendale – Designer, Maker, Decorator, a series of exhibitions from 24 March.
Otley will hold a grand birthday party in June, with Chippend’Ale beer, poems by town poet Matthew Hedley Stoppard, and the creation of Chippendale walking trails including the town’s main Chippendale sights.
Nostell in West Yorkshire will host Interior Worlds: Thomas Chippendale at Nostell throughout the year, using Chippendale’s own correspondence and new discoveries.
Newby Hall will have specialist guided tours throughout the year exploring Chippendale’s contribution to the house.
