Hard on the heels of the publication of a revised Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness and PSV inspection manual, the DVSA has published an updated and revised Categorisation of Defects manual.

Together, the three publications are essential reading for all operators. The Categorisation of Defects has a number of significant changes that include:

– A different format and layout

– Defects being categorised as minor, major and dangerous

– An amendment to the definition of insecure

– The addition of a definition of unsafe modification

– An amendment to the emissions testing standards

– An amendment to the standard for view of the road

– Numerous additions in the lighting section

– An amendment to the standards for prohibition at statutory test

Says the DVSA: “This Guide is intended primarily for the use of examiners within DVSA and Authorised Constables. However, it is made available more widely so that vehicle owners, operators and drivers can become more aware of DVSA’s standards.”
