Showing at the Noël Coward Theatre, the classic musical Half a Sixpence is a show for groups of all ages, as Tim Farr find out
It’s surprising that the celling of the Noël Coward Theatre doesn’t burst open with joy with every performance of Half a Sixpence.
It stars newcomer Charlie Stemp as the leading man, who delivers an outstanding performance as Arthur Kipps, the part that Tommy Steal made famous.
The musical tells the story of how an unexpected inheritance transforms an ambitious but penniless young man from a draper’s assistant to a member of the gentry – a transition that leaves him struggling between not only his past and present life, but between the two ladies from both worlds.
This new production of the 1963 classic is full of stunning choreography and delightful moments. The catchy tunes (some from the original, and some written new) will keep a massive grin on your face throughout.
The show works really well for groups; the classic story and well-known show tunes delight older audience members, while the slick production and choreography wow the younger ones.
It’s so packed full of fun that the absence of a famous face was not missed at all. From the splitting of the sixpence at the beginning, to the full cast banjo encore at the end, this show will keep the audience grinning and humming all the way home.
