FlixBus parent Flix has joined forces with international non-profit blood cancer and blood disorder organisation DKMS to raise awareness and drive stem cell donor registration in countries including the UK.
DKMS is dedicated to saving the lives of people who suffer from blood cancer and blood disorders. Its collaboration with Flix is called Your journey could save a life. Customers using wi-fi on FlixBus services in participating countries and FlixTrain will be guided to a landing page where they can begin the process to register as potential donors in a few clicks.
FlixBus services in Chile, Germany, India, Poland and the United States as well as the UK are captured by the long-term partnership.
Travellers are met with simple, actionable prompts at key digital touchpoints during their journeys, making it easy to sign up as a donor. Flix notes that globally, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer or a severe blood disorder every 27 seconds. In the UK, a blood cancer diagnosis occurs every 14 minutes.
30% of patients may find a matching stem cell donor within their family but 70% rely on unrelated donors. Many never find a match due to underrepresentation in donor registries. DKMS is working globally to diversify that donor pool.
DKMS UK Managing Director Peter McCleave says: “Through this partnership with Flix, we are reaching people in everyday moments and showing them how easy it is to take the first step towards saving a life.
“It is a simple act that can make a real difference, not only for patients here in the UK, but around the world.”
Flix CEO Andre Schwämmlein adds: “This collaboration shows how technology, mobility and purpose can come together. Flix connects people every day across borders, and now we are helping to connect potential lifesavers with patients around the world.”
In the UK, anyone aged 17-55 in general good health and with a body mass index of under 40, and not already registered, can sign up as a potential donor at a dedicated webpage.
