Independent bus operator Grant Palmer is poised to grow its presence in Biggleswade after it stepped in to take up contracted routes that will no longer be operated by Herberts Travel.
From 28 May, Grant Palmer will begin replacements for five services in the Bedfordshire town. That will see four vehicles run from its depot there, although Commercial Manager Thomas Manship says an application to increase the authorisation “with a view to taking on additional work later this year” has been submitted to the Traffic Commissioner.
Under the current round of expansion, Grant Palmer has reached agreement with Central Bedfordshire Council on financial support to provide a set of revised replacements for the former Herberts Travel services. Some of that provision will give additional connectivity to Bedford and Sandy.
Grant Palmer says it will run “low-emission, high specification buses” on the services and that a printed guide to the routes will be available ahead of commencement. All journeys will fall under the £2 bus fare cap scheme.
Mr Manship notes that Grant Palmer has previously replaced services in Biggleswade when other operators have withdrawn provision. “We are pleased to have worked closely with colleagues at Central Bedfordshire Council to agree financial support and develop our new East Bedfordshire routes,” he continues.
“With our great value fares, high quality buses and locally focused customer services, there has never been a better time to leave the car at home and get back on board these vital bus services. We cannot wait to welcome new customers.”
