The Transport Select Committee is starting a formal inquiry into licensing for community transport (CT) minibuses and the broader sustainability of the CT sector.

It is inviting submissions from all stakeholders. The deadline for submissions is Friday 3 November.

Lillian Greenwood: “Ultimately our concern is that socially valuable community transport services are protected”

Says CTA CEO Bill Freeman: “We welcome the inquiry and hope that it gives our sector the opportunity to publically demonstrate the integral role it plays in keeping our communities moving, and brings to light the contributions our members make every day in providing lifelines for the UK’s most vulnerable and isolated citizens.

“In addition, we hope this inquiry aids the Department for Transport in reaching a settlement which protects the unique work of community transport operators.”

The inquiry will examine five key areas including the effectiveness of current regulation; effects on commercial operators, implications of permit operations, effects on CTs on a move to O-Licencing and approaches to funding and commissioning of services.

Committee Chair Lillian Greenwood says: “Ultimately our concern is that socially valuable community transport services are protected and remain sustainable in the long term.”
