Few external differences on new Sprinter, but it is now much ‘cleverer’

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the third-generation Sprinter, and besides continuing the outgoing version’s suitability for use as a minicoach base, factory-converted minibuses will later be available tailored to demand responsive transport applications.

Key will be the all-new MBUX multimedia system. With it, the Sprinter joins the Internet of Things, and operators will be able to communicate with the vehicle and driver.

But MBUX will also be able to work with ride-sharing apps. Waiting passengers’ requests will be sent to the Sprinter automatically, and MBUX’s navigation system will take pick-up points into account when planning routes.

Later, Mercedes-Benz says it will also offer seat sensors to count the number of passengers already aboard and reconcile ride requests with available capacity.

Dimensions, drivelines and weight have no more than minor changes on the new model.
