A battery-electric Optare Metrocity EV demonstrator has spent the new year on trial with Stagecoach Highlands in Inverness, where it is running alongside an existing six-strong Solo EV fleet. The latter buses were the first examples with full-electric heating and are branded Inverness ElectriCity, having entered service in June 2015, and are part of a commitment to zero-emission, the operator says.
Stagecoach Highlands and Islands Engineering Director Russell Henderson adds: “With the success of the Optare Solo EV fleet in Inverness we were keen to trial the larger extended range Metrocity EV, with its greater passenger capacity, and put it through its paces in winter conditions.
“We have been extremely impressed with the Metrocity EV’s range and performance during the trial. All our drivers have enjoyed driving it. The feedback from passengers has also been very positive, with many commenting how quiet, comfortable and smooth the vehicle is.”
Optare Commercial Director Robert Drewery adds: “There are now over 100 Optare electric buses in service in the UK and Europe. As a manufacturer, we remain committed to working with local authorities and operators to deliver efficient and effective zero emission transport solutions that improve air quality in our towns and cities.
“I am delighted that the Metrocity EV has delivered an impressive performance for Stagecoach in Inverness.”
Optare continues to invest extensively in the next generation of electric buses. The company is currently building vehicles utilising higher density batteries and advanced integral lightweight construction to deliver much improved range, reduced power consumption and lower cost of ownership.
