Rear View’s wheels in motion

Rear View, a new show that uses a customised double-decker bus, has started its UK tour.

‘Performance poetry’ is viewed from the double-decker

From IOU Theatre, the show successfully premiered at Norfolk & Norwich Festival on the bank holiday weekend, with 23 performances over four days.

It “blurs the lines between real and imaginary” by using the streets as its stage, with the 40-strong audience sitting on the customised bus and facing backwards to watch the performance.

The production has an O-Licence to operate the vehicle, a 1989 Volvo Citybus that has been converted by the company alongside engineers, mechanics and boat builders. It is insured through specialist coach and bus industry broker Wrightsure.

David Wheeler, Artistic Director at IOU, says: “This project has taken many years to develop and has been an idea waiting to happen for some time. I’m really excited about seeing the tour and the different interpretations of the piece in each locale.”

Rear View is written and performed by poets Cecilia Knapp and Jemima Foxtrot, combining storytelling, performance poetry and an ambient sound score.

The show will next appear at the Greenwich and Docklands Festival on 29 June-2 July.
