Upton-upon-Severn’s new initiative to welcome groups. By Michaela Peacock
Upton-upon-Severn, a quaint town in the Malvern Hills District of Worcestershire, has launched new venture to attract coach visitors: Coach Stop Upton.
The new initiative titled Coach Stop Upton, has been launched in a bid attract more coach visits to the area.
“The council supported the Upton Business Association to develop something that could be a legacy for the future, and attract more visitors to the town,” says Malcolm Salisbury, Economic Development Officer for Malvern Hills District Council.
“We needed something that would stick in the minds of GTOs and operators rather than ‘lets go to Upton’, we wanted something that would be memorable.”
Perched on the edge of the River Severn, the town – considering its size – has plenty of history and sights for groups to wander around and explore.
“It’s got a great deal of history with the English Civil War,” says Mr Salisbury. “Nowadays, it’s one of the few towns that offers an independent shopping experience, it’s a quirky discovery town.”
In the heart of the town visitors will see a charming tower. Known as the "Pepperpot" by locals, it is the remains of the towns medieval church and houses the town's heritage centre.
Other points of interest in Upton include 17th Century houses, a leisurely cruise on the Severn, historical blue plaques to discover and with three floors to explore, the Tudor House Museum dating back 1550.
“An afternoon stop, or an extended weekend with a multi visit to Upton and Malvern, there is a variety on offer and different itineraries available,” says Mr Salisbury.
