Eastleigh operator Xelabus and theatre and arts specialist Mayflower have provided over 1,000 school pupils with 100% subsidised transport to theatre shows in Southampton via a subsidy scheme agreed between the two parties.
The collaboration has allowed many of those children to experience live theatre for the first time and helps to fulfil Mayflower’s aim that every person can see such performances. It was launched at the start of 2025 and has benefited 1,042 students form 19 schools. 58% of those were first-time theatregoers.
The subsidy scheme supports schools as well as community groups by funding transport to both Mayflower venues in Southampton, which are Mayflower Theatre and Mayflower Studios. The organisation notes that while schools may be able to afford discounted admission prices, paying for transport is often a challenge.
“These costs are usually redirected to parents, and results in many disadvantaged children not being able to participate – which results in schools deciding not to commit,” Mayflower notes. Chief Executive Michael Ockwell adds how working with Xelabus “means those barriers are being lifted.”
The operator provides discounted transport as part of its contribution to the transport subsidy scheme. It has also applied a special livery to an Alexander Dennis Enviro400 to mark the partnership.
Subsidy is awarded by Mayflower to schools that are state funded; are above 15% for free school meals or located in a designated Levelling Up for Culture place; can demonstrate how the trip will benefit the school; and are applying for a show that is not already discounted below the school rate.
Xelabus Commercial Manager Phil Blair says that the operator “is proud to be part of this journey with Mayflower, helping schools and community groups to be inspired by live theatre.”
He continues: “Seeing the Mayflower-themed bus out in the community not only raises awareness of the scheme but also celebrates the rich programme of shows on offer across both venues.”
