A memorial stone for a Rochdale coach company’s founder is now back on permanent display, close to its original location.
The stone was originally placed in the wall of the Yelloway Motor Services’ travel centre in Rochdale in 1969 in memory of firm founder, chairman and general manager Herbert Allen, who died in 1956. It was laid by his son Hubert, who succeeded Mr Allen as chairman, and rescued by former Yelloway driver John Whitworth during demolition of the travel centre in the 1980s.
After careful restoration, the memorial stone has been placed on display at Rochdale Borough Council’s Number One Riverside building, close to its original location. It was officially unveiled by Joy Parker, daughter of Hubert Allen, other members of his family and council leader Allen Brett.
