A wheelchair-using trainer with the Association of Trainers (ASOT) has completed a cross-country fundraising challenge using only public transport, travelling from John O’Groats to Land’s End armed with only a bus pass.
Barry Mackleston, 72, from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester (pictured) undertook the seven-day journey over the Easter period, covering more than 1,200 miles by bus and rail to raise over £8,500 for Wythenshawe Community Rugby Club.
The fundraising effort is aimed at supporting grassroots sport and improving facilities at the club, which has faced ongoing challenges with ageing infrastructure and funding constraints. It builds on a previous fundraising effort in 2025, when Barry completed a bus-only trip from Manchester to London, raising more than £1,500 for the same cause.
The challenge was not without setbacks as midway through the trip, Barry was forced to temporarily return home after a burglary at his property, in which cash and personal items were stolen. He described the incident as devastating but resumed the journey shortly afterwards, determined to complete the trip.
Ross Lockett, CEO of ASOT, says: “Barry is an amazing person. He has been a trainer for us for over five years and has visited our office several times. The challenge is now completed and he is over the moon. After being so excited about completing this, he is happy now to not focus on any further challenges, only on the future, and trying to keep his club going.”
A former transport worker, Barry has become informally known as “Bus Pass Barry” for his fundraising journeys using concessionary travel. He lost his leg in an accident five years ago and says the rugby club has played a key role in his recovery and mental wellbeing.
