Stagecoach South Wales Managing Director Martin Gibbon has been named Chair of the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) Cymru Bus Commission.
He will oversee CPT Cymru’s bus policy work and engage with the trade body to ensure that the voice of bus operators across Wales is at the forefront of debate, Stagecoach says. His elevation comes at a time when bus services in Wales face a major shift to a franchised environment under Welsh Government plans.
Mr Gibbon joined Stagecoach in 2011 via its graduate trainee scheme and held a number of roles before his appointment as Stagecoach South Wales MD during 2023. He is responsible for around 850 employees and over 100 services.
Speaking about his responsibility with CPT Cymru, he says: “CPT is the leading trade body for the coach and bus sector, providing specialist political, operational and policy advice to members when they need it most, and I am delighted to take up the role of Chair of the CPT Cymru Bus Commission.
“Bus plays a critical role in connecting communities, unlocking economic growth and reducing carbon emissions in Wales. I look forward to working with our members and stakeholders to ensure that policy decisions are aligned with the goal of delivering improvements for passengers and members alike.”
CPT Cymru Director Aaron Hill has welcomed Mr Gibbon. He says: “I am delighted to see people with such a wealth of industry experience and knowledge arrive in these key roles.
“With significant reform on the horizon for the bus industry in Wales, I look forward to working with all of them to make the case for buses as a key part of Wales’s social and economic prosperity.”
