Parksafe Pedestrian Detection Camera System is AI-based

Parksafe says that its artificial intelligence-based Pedestrian Detection Camera System eliminates blind spots when fitted to coaches and buses by detecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and people using scooters to the front, side and rear of the vehicle.

The product uses what Parksafe describes as the latest artificial intelligence technology to “accurately evaluate images of pedestrian and vehicle detection” in those areas in real time. On some fitments, external alarms can be connected to the cameras to allow a warning to be sounded to parties that are too close and at increased risk.

Meanwhile, the driver receives colour-coded warnings (red, amber and green) and is given clear distances by measurement, which are displayed on a monitor in the cab. That allows them “to make an informed decision based on the colour code and imminent danger,” says Parksafe, “increasing the driver’s awareness and confidence in congested or rural areas.”

It adds that more traditional ultrasonic sensors also detect street furniture, which could lead to false warning being issued and the driver becoming complacent. AI prevents that, the supplier continues.

The Pedestrian Detection Camera System can also be integrated with the Parksafe On Demand web platform. It gives fleet managers the ability to remotely view live footage, download footage remotely, and track a vehicle.

Parksafe notes that pedestrians, cyclist and motorcyclists made up 81% of all people killed or seriously injured on UK roads in 2021, adding that the elimination of blind spots will go a long way to helping to reduce the risk of collision with those vulnerable users.
