Stoneridge has revealed its SE5000 Smart 2 tachograph, which is compliant with recent legislation concerning the use of second generation smart units.
The new product includes GeoFix and position authentication via Galileo Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA). The latter is key to requirements for second generation smart tachographs.
OSNMA “enables automated border crossings and speeds up roadside cabotage checks by registering positions during loading and unloading,” says Stoneridge. The supplier adds that such capability also “enhances monitoring of drivers’ rest periods and driving times, preventing fatigue and improving road safety.”
Also part of the SE5000 Smart 2 unit is an integrated Bluetooth/ITS interface. That allows users to download and share driver and tachograph data via mobile apps, with Stoneridge noting that such data transfer assists with scheduling and fleet management. The unit is also compatible with Stoneridge’s OPTAC3 web-based tachograph analysis system.
Stoneridge says that the SE5000 Smart 2 has a similar user interface to previous models. Other updates have been made for the purpose of rest times during ferry crossings and crew handovers, and the implementation of the 12-day rule for international coach trips.
Retained EU regulations require that new vehicles first registered from 21 August and which have a tachograph must be fitted with second generation smart units, which bring with them improved detection of tampering or manipulation attempts.
Existing vehicles used on international journeys must be retrofitted with the same units by 18 August 2025 at the latest, although an earlier deadline is in place where analogue or non-smart digital tachographs are presently fitted. Vehicles that work only domestically are not affected by the change.
