Views across the Channel and a fascinating introduction to the Battle of Britain makes for an interesting and poignant visit for groups
Few places combine a chance for quiet reflection with the hands-on excitement of a modern visitor attraction quite as well as the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone in Kent.
The clifftop location of this tribute to the men who fought and won the Battle of Britain offers stunning views across the Channel, while The Scramble Experience provides a fascinating introduction to a conflict that changed history.
The Experience is housed in The Wing, a striking modern building designed in the shape of a Spitfire wing and opened by Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in 2015.
Outside are full-sized replicas of the Spitfire and Hurricane so closely linked with the Battle, while the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall lists the names of all those who took part. At the heart of the site is the National Memorial to the Few, an enigmatic carving of an airman looking out over The Channel.
Admission to the site and its many external features is free, although there is a small charge to visit the Experience.
Group rates are available and pre-booked coaches park for free. A well-stocked shop and café add to the attractions.
