There’s plenty for groups to see and do in Yorkshire to inspire a visit. Beautiful countryside, an abundance of museums, and a host of interesting and unusual places to visit, the region is also home to this years’ City of Culture for 2017 – Hull
East Yorkshire
Hull is the place to visit in East Yorkshire for 2017. As this year’s City of Culture, Hull has curated four seasons spread across the year, each showcasing something different about the city; Made in Hull, Roots and Routes, Freedom and Tell the World.
Taking place from 1-7 January, Made in Hull opens the year-long celebration, with large scale projection on buildings, illuminated skylines, soundscapes and live performance all telling the story of Hull, situated throughout the city centre.
Starting in February, Back To Ours will commence throughout the city of Hull. With something for everyone, this series of festivals will shine a light on music, comedy, theatre, cabaret and dance. Taking place at venues at the heart of Hull’s communities, Back To Ours celebrates well known and local artists. Back To Ours will return to the city in May, June, September and October, so there’s plenty of opportunity for groups to experience the festival circuit.
South Yorkshire
Once the Sheffield Deer Park, Sheffield Manor Lodge has a lot for groups to discover. Explore the ruins of what was once a Tudor stately home. Stroll through the Pictorial Gardens which, unlike many heritage site gardens, is the centre of a movement for seed sown impressionist garden schemes. The gardens are best viewed between April-August, when wildflower meadows bloom and create a colourful and unique landscape. There’s lots to do in the city of Sheffield too – like visiting the Winter Garden, one of the largest greenhouses to be built in the UK over the last 100 years, home to 2,500 plants from around the world.
Doncaster is the perfect place if you’re looking for heritage. In particular, Doncaster has a rich railway heritage, as some of the first locomotive works were established there in 1853. Doncaster is also home to Mallard, a 1930s A4 locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, which in 1938 set a world speed record for a steam train of 126mph.
West Yorkshire
Leeds is a charming blend of the old and the new, and a great place for groups to explore when visiting west Yorkshire. Scenic houses like Kirkstall Abbey just minutes away and bursting with history to be discovered. Leeds is also home to four theatres, and is one of the only cities outside of London to have an Opera House and ballet company – meaning there’s plenty for groups to see if they’re in the mood for some cultural entertainment.
