A new transport body for Glasgow, and the axing of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), is a possible outcome after local elections that saw the Scottish National Party (SNP) become the largest party running Glasgow City Council, ending Labour’s 30-year control of the city.
The SNP’s election manifesto pledged to create Transport for Glasgow to “implement a new integrated transport strategy.”
Glasgow SNP Group Leader Susan Aitken has been strongly critical of SPT’ which has suffered a raft of scandals in recent years, the most recent being the sale of minibuses at knock-down prices.
SPT is the statutory regional transport partnership (RTP) covering 12 local authorities. The SNP Scottish Government has promised a review of all seven RTPs as part of preparation for a new national transport strategy.
