I read last week’s President’s Diary about how the health of the high street is important to buses with interest [routeone/President’s Diary/25 July].
Most towns now are trying later events, which is no good as buses don't run late. All the big housing estates have no buses either.
You look at the big major housing developments, and there is rarely a bus. Also look at some of the out-of-town shopping parks, they have minimal service to local areas.
There are normally lots of buses to far-away locations, but it means more local residents can't use the bus.
I think it is a vicious circle which will never stop until the bus companies take a risk or council's demand more money from developments for bus services.
My local shopping park is an eight-minute drive (or a 45-minute walk). No bus linked the two until one year ago when I kept campaigning locally.
More buses to the towns equal more shoppers, which means more are buses needed and more shops open. It’s simple.
