A minibus driver has been sacked for gross misconduct, after he left a four-year-old boy alone on a minibus at a yard in Inverness.

John Robertson was travelling on a D&E Coaches’ minibus when the driver apparently missed his stop on the way home from school in Inverness and drove over Kessock Bridge, before heading back to the depot.

The boy was thought to have waited on the vehicle for about an hour before he got off and started walking along the road near to Inverness Caledonian Thistle's stadium.

He was spotted by two women, who phoned the police, which had also been contacted by his parents.

D&E Coaches says: “We are extremely disappointed at the circumstances.

“Relying on an assurance from another pupil that this child was not on the bus is unacceptable. All drivers are expected to check their buses at the end of the journey but this clearly did not occur.”

As a result of the incident, the firm is introducing a new Driver CPC course on Driver Awareness on School Contracts.
