The Stop/Start feature available with Cummins B4.5 and B6.7 engines reduces fuel consumption by automatically switching the engine off when boarding/alighting, or stopped at traffic lights.

When stopped, the engine becomes silent with no vibration, resulting in a safer and more passenger friendly experience.

Operating 14-16 hours per day, 30 ‘Stops’ per hour, Stop/Start has reduced the fuel consumption of a Euro 6 London double-deck by up to 8%. Resulting in a yearly fuel saving of £1500-2500 per bus.

Each bus with Stop/Start could save 4-6 tonnes of CO2 annually and significant reductions of kerbside NO2 emissions have also been identified, effectively taking the Cummins-powered buses even lower than regulated Euro VI levels.

Ashley Watton, Cummins Director, On-Highway Business Europe says: “We are really pleased to see the immediate impact Stop/Start has made on reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions – this represents perhaps the lowest investment an operator can make to achieve the biggest savings.”
