Centrad unveils AI-powered low bridge warning system

Fleet CCTV and telematics provider Centrad has launched a new camera-based system designed to cut the risk of bridge strikes.

The system is branded CenBridge and uses artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced geolocation technology to deliver real-time alerts when a low bridge is detected, warning drivers from 50 metres or more.

The launch follows a successful trial with Staffordshire-based operator Bus Link where the system demonstrated the ability to give timely warnings of hazards.

Centrad says CenBridge eliminates false positives by deploying a “deep-learning” algorithm trained on a wide range of UK bridge data, including sites without signage and with complex approaches such as harsh turns or low light. It uses a database with more than 2,000 mapped low bridges and provides both audio and optional visual alerts when vehicles enter geofenced zones.

Centrad says CenBridge continuously updates its algorithm remotely and is designed to function reliably even in environments with poor GPS signal “by seamlessly integrating AI with precise geolocation data.”

The launch comes amid ongoing regulatory pressure to reduce incidents. In August the Senior Traffic Commissioner launched a plea for the industry to solve the bridge strike issue, while Network Rail continues to run public awareness campaigns.

Geoff Cross, Managing Director of Centrad, agrees that more needs to be done to quicken progress in reducing incidents, and says the implementation of smarter technology is key to driving down incident figures.

“The number one cause of bridge strikes is human error,” he notes. “Often traffic commissioners take the position that the vast majority of these incidents are avoidable, and attribute it directly to either negligence or insufficient training.

“Research indicates that 43% of drivers admit they do not measure their vehicle’s height before setting off, while 52% acknowledge neglecting to account for low bridges when planning their routes. Even with policies, procedures, and systems in place, along with extensive training provided by the operator, mistakes can still happen. Therefore, it’s clear that while continuing to raise awareness around bridge strikes and encourage regular training is important, another layer of protection is quite clearly needed. That’s where CenBridge comes in. By offering real-time alerts and precise location-based warnings, it gives drivers an additional safety net to avoid low bridges, essentially acting as a second set of eyes for drivers while they’re out on the road, preventing bridge strikes before they occur.”

CenBridge is available as a standalone solution or as an additional option that can be integrated into Centrad’s multi-camera systems, meaning operators don’t have to change existing hardware.
