Southern Vectis has bid farewell to one of its longest-serving employees, Barry Taylor, who has retired after 50 years with the business.
The 66-year-old started out with Southern Vectis as an engineering apprentice in 1975, becoming a qualified fitter four years later.
Mr Taylor enjoyed a variety of roles in the workshop over the next three decades.
Then, in 2006, he moved to become a tree-cutter, ensuring routes were clear for buses travelling across the Isle of Wight.
He also worked as a driver for school services up until his retirement this month.
“It’s been an incredible journey, filled with lots of great memories,” he says. “I’ve worked with many colleagues over the years – and some of them I hope will continue to be good friends for years to come.
“I’ll stay in touch with the guys at the depot and, when I see buses on the island, it’ll remind me of all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure they they’re in the best condition they can be before they go out into service.”
Simon Moye, Operations Manager for the Go-Ahead subsidiary, says: “Words cannot express our gratitude for such an incredible achievement.
“Thank you Barry! We hope you have a long and healthy retirement, which is very well deserved.”
